Places to study

We’re currently renovating the Main Library to create even better study spaces. In the meantime, availability may be limited – here you’ll find the latest updates and alternative options.

Architecture and Civil Engineering Library

The Architecture and Civil Engineering Library offers a calm and inspiring study environment. It provides around 80 study spaces and a quiet reading room suitable for individual study. You also have access to specialised literature in architecture.

Chalmers Learning Commons at Kuggen

Kuggen offers modern and flexible study spaces in a creative environment. There are open areas, group rooms, and a quiet reading room suitable for both individual study and group work. Printers are also available.

Renovation of the Main Library

The Main Library will remain open as usual but there will be fewer study spaces than normal. You can find study spaces at Chalmers’ two other libraries: the Architecture and Civil Engineering Library and Chalmers Learning Commons. You can also find information about additional study spaces on campus in the Campus Maps app

When the renovation is finished, the Main Library will offer more study places than before.

You need to reserve the books you want to borrow

All books are stored in closed stacks during the renovation. This means you must reserve the books you want to borrow before you visit the library. Library staff will collect the books for you. When your books are ready to pick up, you will receive an email.

The stages of the renovation

The renovation will take place in two stages, with different parts of the library being renovated at different times.

Stage 1 – Only the Entrance Hall and the Reading Room are open

From Monday 19th January to Friday 3rd July, only the Entrance Hall and the Silent Reading Room will be open and accessible for visitors.

From Monday 5th July to Sunday 9th August the whole Main Library will be completely closed and not even accessible with a Chalmers access card. During this time you can still borrow books and ask questions at our temporary information desk at the Servicecenter, Chalmers Entré, Chalmersplatsen 1, between 11:00 and 13:00 on Monday to Friday.

The main body of the library renovated during Stage 1 will reopen on Monday 10th August, and the Entrance Hall and Reading Room will then be closed for renovations during the autumn term.

During Stage 1, you can:

  • Borrow books – but you must place a reservation first, as the books are stored in closed stacks during the renovation.

  • Get help and ask questions at the Information Desk.

About Stage 1

Starts on Monday 19 January 2026 and is expected to continue throughout the spring term and the first part of the summer.

The areas to the left of the main entrance (the glass entrance) will be closed for renovation.

  • On Floor 0 (the same floor as the main entrance, one floor down from the entrance by Olga’s Café), the large book hall, the study room next to it with the whiteboard area, and the toilets will be closed.

  • On Floor 1 (one floor up from the main entrance, same level as the entrance by Olga’s Café), the large book hall and the computer room will be closed. Computers have been moved to the Entrance Hall.

  • Floor 2 (two floors up from the main entrance, one floor up from the entrance by Olga’s Café) will be closed.

Stage 2 – The newly renovated book halls and computer room are open

During Stage 2, you can:

  • Use study spaces and group rooms in the newly renovated parts of the Main Library.

    • On Floor 2, there will be study spaces and group rooms.

    • On Floor 1, there will be study spaces and group rooms, as well as a computer room with printers.

    • On Floor 0, there will also be study spaces.

  • Get help and ask questions at the Information Desk, which will be moved to a new location within the renovated areas (more information will follow).

  • Book and use group study rooms in the open areas (Group study rooms).

  • Borrow books – more information about book access during Stage 2 will be provided later.

About Stage 2

Starts in August and continues during most of the autumn term.

The areas directly ahead and to the right when entering through the main entrance (the glass entrance) will be closed for renovation.

  • On Floor 1, the Entrance Hall and the Reading Room will be closed.

  • On Floor 0, the room directly behind the staircase and the Chalmers Writing Centre room Språkunder will be closed.

Why is the Main Library being renovated?

The renovation aims to create more study spaces and improve the library and study environment. The new study spaces will be available in new group rooms, open areas, and two teaching rooms. The renovation is part of the project A Unified Campus.

More information will follow

We will publish updates here and in other channels as soon as we receive new information about the renovation and how it may affect you.
