Access to digital resources

We describe the different ways to access the library's digital resources here, and give you tips on what to do if it does not work.

Students and staff at Chalmers have access to e-resources via your Chalmers ID (CID). You can access the library's databases, e-books and e-journals wherever you are. Other people can only access e-resources from the public access computers in the library.

Start your search on the library's web

The search bar at the top of the library website is a good place to start. You will be asked to log in with your CID if you are working remotely or not connected to Chalmers' network, in order to have the authority to access the digital resources.

The results list generated by a search gives you different options to access the respective resources, you can click links which lead to articles, e-books or databases.

Log in to the publishers' platforms - "Institutional login"

In many cases it is possible to log in directly to the publishers' websites using your CID to access resources that the library has subscribed to.

Look for options such as "Sign in via your institution", "OpenAthens" or similar on the suppliers' websites. If you get several Chalmers options to choose from, select "Chalmers Libarary".

Some publishers and databases also offer personal accounts. You do not need to create a personal account to access the e-resources, however, you may want to do so to set up alerts etc..

Add Chalmers to Google Scholar as your institution

You can activate a setting in Google Scholar giving you easy access to the full text of scientific articles which the library has subscribed to.

Follow the instructions below to get the proper authority for Chalmers:

  1. Go to settings in Google Scholar

  2. Click on "Library links"

  3. Find and choose "Chalmers University of Technology Library - Full-text @ Chalmers.se"

Install the LibKey Nomad browser extension

We recommend the LibKey Nomad browser extension if you start your search on the open web (for example using Google Scholar) without going via the library's website.

LibKey Nomad checks which articles Chalmers has access to via the library's subscriptions automatically and finds articles with open access. It is particularly useful when you are off campus.

Problems accessing digital resources?

If you encounter problems accessing an e‑resource, check the following:

  • Make sure you are an active student/employee in Chalmers’ system.
Contact your department if something seems incorrect. If you have left Chalmers, you no longer have remote access to e‑resources.

  • Search for e‑resources using the search box on the library’s website.
You can also search for databases there. If you use another method to find e‑resources, access cannot be guaranteed.

  • Clear your browser’s cache and cookies.
You can also try using incognito/private browsing mode to see whether previously stored information is causing the issue.

  • Try a different browser.

  • If you still cannot access the e‑resource, please email the library at: support.lib@chalmers.se
Include information about which e‑resource you are trying to reach and a screenshot showing any error message.

Terms and conditions

You have the right to use the library's databases, e-journals and e-books for your studies or research.

You may not use the digital resources for commercial purposes or on behalf of a company. Systematic downloading is not permitted, nor is the use of software or scripts which automate downloading.

You may print out and download individual articles from e-journals needed for your own use for non-commercial study or research purposes.

E-book providers have different systems and the rights for what you are allowed to print and download vary.

Printing and downloading "a reasonable portion" of the e-book for your own use for non-commercial study or research purposes is usually permitted, but in some cases you may only print or download a few pages.

Some providers allow entire books to be downloaded for offline reading. However, downloaded e-books may never be shared with anyone else.

The list of e-book platforms contains specific information and terms of use for each platform.

Neither student nor staff at Chalmers?

You can still access some of the digital resources, even if you are not a student or member of staff at Chalmers, but you have to be on site and use the public access computers. You will need a library account to do this, and login with your personal ID number or library card number and PIN code.

There are a number of public access computers at the Main Library, Johanneburg, and at Chalmers Learning Commons, Kuggen, Lindholmen.
